Navii Compass

Runner-up @ CHI Design Competition & Published Paper

Situation

In 2017 the Spitalfields City Farm struggled to secure funding because of insufficient data about their visitors.

Task

As part of the CHI Student Design Competition my team and I had to find a way to encourage visitors to give feedback without intruding on their experience of the farm.

Design Tools

Autodesk Fusion 360, OmniGraffle, Sketch, Final Cut Pro X, Arduino, Illustrator

UX Skills

Ethnography, Stakeholder Analysis, Semi-structured Interviews, Personas, Affinity Diagrams, Task Analysis, 10-plus-10 Method, (Hybrid) Sketching, Storyboards, Focus Groups, Paper Prototypes, Wizard of Oz

Action

  1. DATA COLLECTION & ANALYSIS - We started with ethnography and a focus group to gather requirements. The gathered data was analysed using affinity diagrams and task analysis.
  2. BRAINSTORMING - We brainstormed ideas using sketches and chose the best ideas using an evaluation matrix.
  3. PROTOTYPING & USABILITY TESTING - We created multiple prototypes, tested them by employing usability testing and refined them based on the results.
  4. CREATE BRANDING - Based on the logo I designed the website, social media assets, email template, flyers and t-shirts. I had to use Illustrator for the flyers and t-shirts because Sketch does not support CMYK.
MY ROLE WITHIN THE TEAM - Within the team, my analytical and creative skills stood out. I brought up aspects that my teammates had failed to consider and came up with extraordinary ideas that inspired our design.

Result

NaviiCompass is a feedback system that encourages exploration and provides educational content while gathering feedback from visitors.

The system is comprised of multiple compasses and information stations, which are located at points of interest throughout the farm

The compass guides the visitor to the nearest station, where they can learn a fun fact about the exhibit and are asked to share a bit about themselves.

We finished second (out of 79 teams) at the design competition. Our conference paper can be downloaded here.
